Genealogy DNA kits make comeback around holidays, but there is more to know

This year, millions of genealogy DNA kits will be given as Christmas presents. But before you spit in the tube and send it off, know that DNA is only part of the story.

Thousands of years of marriages, moves, properties and births go into every family tree.

"There's a lot to think about when you do that kind of research," said Elizabeth Glasgow.

Thanks to new technology, more people are seeing the appeal of the old art of genealogy. That's where places like the Warren Trumbull County Public Library come in.
"It's the history of your family and where you came from and what your story was. There's a huge resurgence now because of DNA research. But the DNA doesn't tell the whole story. So you have to do the back work," Glasgow said.

Local genealogy centers bring together birth certificates, marriage licenses, and historical documents. Glasgow is one of the people specially trained to help people on their search.

DNA doesn't tell the whole story. For example, a test can reveal long-lost family secrets. Plus, with a country made up primarily of immigrants, there are barriers.

"We had a fellow who sat with a Czech dictionary, and looked at microfilm for months and months," she said.

Then there are the special moments.

"We have had people who discovered their birth parents, we've had people who saw pictures of their parents for the first time because we carry yearbooks. Things like that are big moments," she said.

Through all of the discoveries... the centers are here to guide the way.
