New preservation tool at the Genealogy Library
Flipping through photo albums, restringing 8mm film rolls, or even popping in a VHS tape can be a fun way to learn the record of your family history. However, what do you do when the projector dies — or the film rips? or any other multitude of problems that can come from aging media platforms?
The the Stephens County Genealogical Society recently received two grants for the creation of a Memory Lab at the Genealogy Library, 301 N. 8th. A memory lab is a place where people can go and convert their photographs, VHS home movies, 8mm or Super 8mm home movies to digital format.
Jan Cole, head librarian, said this was a great tool for the library.
“The changing formats of technology has long been a topic of interest to conservationists and librarians,” she said. “As a parent, who has a ton of VHS tapes of my daughter growing up, and the 8mm reel to reel movies of my childhood, I was interested in a way to preserve them digitally. I read an article in Library Journal last summer about the Neighborhood Library of Washington D.C. that had put in such a lab to help people transfer obsolete formats into digital formats for preservation.”
Cole called and talked to a librarian there researched the topic further and thinking it could be something useful for Stephens County residents.
