A Breakthrough in a 1999 Kidnapping and Rape Case In 2020, a cold-case team in Escondido re-examined a 1999 kidnapping and rape case, utilizing genetic genealogy. The pivotal moment came when a relative of Mark Thompson Hunter, the assailant, uploaded DNA to a public database accessible by law enforcement. This breakthrough led to Hunter's arrest and subsequent conviction.
