New York Genealogy

Studying American genealogy in New York opens a variety of interesting research opportunities. Its diverse population and elaborate past make learning more about your family lineage a truly rewarding experience.

As with any US genealogy project, it’s important to gather as much information from your relatives as possible. You can do this by conducting interviews or consulting heirlooms such as family bibles, diaries, newspaper clippings, letters, and other sources that are unique to your family.

If you find these resources scarce, don’t lose hope. There are still a wide assortment of places you can find information on New York genealogy. Sometimes you can find a wealth of details simply by studying the history of the area your ancestors are from. You can also zero in on your ancestors’ exact location by studying census reports, city directories, county borders, obituaries, church records, and other documents.

Also available are historical texts, microfilmed documents, and even official records of births, deaths, weddings, deeds, and other relevant information in state libraries and courthouses.

It’s also a good idea to study the effects of surrounding locations as well. This is a lesser known part of North American genealogy that is nevertheless very important. For example, if your ancestors lived in a small town in New York State, how did living near a populous metropolis such as New York City affect situations such as jobs, imported goods, and entertainment?

Given that a large part of the population of New York is composed of immigrants, you may discover you have several different lineages in your past. As you study the ethnic background of your ancestors, you may want to study the country of their birth.

In order to do this, it’s required that you have as many solid details about your ancestors as possible. Include full names, birth dates, death dates, and last known addresses. By keeping thorough notes and citing your resources, you may be able to trace your family line this far.

Similarly, if you discover you have Native American heritage, there are several New York genealogy associations who are willing to help you find out who your ancestor was. However, in order to ensure the search is fruitful, it’s important that you have their basic information.

A note on names: It’s typically not a good idea to base your research solely on your ancestor’s first and last name. Given that many of New York’s population experienced many name changes when they immigrated to the United States, you may find yourself encountering a sea of similar or identical names to wade through.

It is during these situations that you should keep in mind the other unique pieces of information you have in mind.

Finally, should you need assistance, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is renowned for its extensive database, historic texts, research services, and other helpful resources.
